Why does a surf business make skin care products? Well the simple answer is that like you, I have skin too. A few years ago, I was looking at the skin products I was using on myself and noticed that they all were petroleum based. Petroleum ... like the crude oil from the ground that fuels your car - yuck! Mineral oil is also made from crude oil. Aquaphor is a popular brand of petroleum jelly that I was using on my own skin. So, I used my science background and started making all-natural and preservative free skin products for myself, my friends and now you.
I surf all year round and I know my skin was taking a beating from the heat, cold, wind, salt and microorganisms in the water. Petroleum jelly had been traditionally used by surfers to protect their skin from the elements, but I was not putting it all over my face, So, I formulated all-natural Skin Shield to replace petroleum jelly in my life. Today, Skin Shield is a part of my daily skin care routine. It is great on very dry skin, cuts and scrapes.
Basal cell carsinoma is one of many types of skin cancer. Your skin consists of many layers of cells and it is the basal skin cells that make those skin cells. When cells are produced, they are produced by the division of one cell into 2 identical cells (mitosis). When this happens the cell's DNA is copied (replication) so both cells have the same genetic information. Cancer happens when there is mistake in a cell's DNA and that mistake is copied and both cells have the mistake. Then those 2 cells make other cells with the same mistake and they keep dividing into more and more bad cancer cells.
I have been going to my dermotologist for years and I have been "fighting" basal cell carcinoma. Treatment includes: identification, skin sample removal and analyzed, then if positive for basal cells, removal. Removal includes cutting around the area removing the basal cells, followed by suturing the skin closed. The skin that is removed is analyzed to insure that all the basal cells in the infected area was removed. Aftercare of the removal site includes covering the sutures lightly with petroleum jelly and a bandage to protect the sutures. Petroleum jelly!
I have been through 9 basal cell surgeries and a 10th one coming. I am not a doctor and I do not claim to have any cancer fighting products, treatments or cures. Please see your dermotologist regularly. For the last 2 basal cell surgeries, I ditched the petroleum jelly for skin/suture aftercare and only used DILGO SURF SKIN SHIELD on my sutures. The results: my skin healed better and faster than it did by using petroleum jelly. Again, I am not a doctor so I can't advise you to do the same, but Skin Shield worked for me. There are so many uses of Skin Shield. If you have any questions about any of the Dilgo Surf skin products, send me an email at info@dilgosurf.com.
Organic beeswax is in all our formulas. Beeswax helps hold all the butters and oils in place. It is also occlusive which means it will add a barrier to the skin so the other ingredients can do their work and it locks in moisture.
Nothing is beachier than coconut. Organic, unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil is in Skin Shield, Skin Balm and Lip Balms. Coconut oil is occlusive like beeswax and provides protection and moisture and hyrdation for the skin. Coconut oil adds to the "stick" of the Shield and Balms. Coconut oil has antimicrobial and antifungal properties and has a natural SPF of ~7. Coconut oil has vitamins E and K.
We only use organic and RSPO certified sustainably harvested palm oil. Palm oil is coconut oil's barrier buddy that has more "stick" than coconut oil and is only used in Skin Shield. Palm oil is rich in vitamin A and E.
We use organic, unrefined and cold-pressed Jojoba oil in our formulas. It is a rock star in skin care. It is a natural oil that is the closest match to human sebum oil. Sebum is your skins natural oil that is produced in the hair folicle and lubricates hair as it grows out of the skin and keep your skin moist. The list of benefits is long! Jojoba grows in the Southwest US and northern Mexico. Native Americans historically used jojoba to treat sores and wounds. Jojoba oil is in Skin Shield, Skin Recovery and Muscle Rub. Jojoba has vitamins A, B, D and E.
Kukui nut oil was used by Polynesians and brought to Hawaii for its many benefits. We use organic, refined and cold-pressed kukui oil. Kukui is loaded with vitamins A and E. Kukui Nut Oil supports skin barrier function, reduces inflammation, protects against irritants. Kukui is in Skin Shield, Skin Recovery and Muscle Rub. Kukui nut oil has vitamins A, C and E.
Mango Butter is derived from mango seeds not the fruit. We only use organic mango butter. It is a butter rather than an oil because it is a solid at room temperature. It is the main ingredient in Skin Recovery. It is great for your skin! It moisturizes and softens the skin, fights aging, heals scars, and used to relieve eczema and psoriasis. Mango butter is loaded with vitamins A, B1, B6, C, D, E and F.
Organic, unrefined and cold-pressed avocado oil joins jojoba and kukui nut oil in Skin Recovery. Avocado oil is great at relieving and healing sunburn. Aloe is well known to be good for sunburn, but it is mostly water. When wauter is added to any lotion, cream, salve, or balm, preservatives are added because water grows bacteria and algae. We'll stick the avocado oil. Loaded with vitamins A, D, E and K.
When formulating the Skin Balm and Lip Balm, I went with organic kokum butter because it is great for lips and skin but also for its higher melting point. Balms have a tough time in warmer climates and summertime heat, so kokum it is! Vitamins A, B3 and C included.
Dilgo Surf only uses organic cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is used to make chocolate, smells like chocolate and is great for the skin. Cocoa butter gives our chocolate and mint chocolate Lip Balms its delicious smell. Cocoa butter is great anyplace on the body and is used to heal scars and stretch marks. Contains vitamins A, B1, B3 and E.
Organic and cold pressed hemp seed oil is a up and coming superstar in the massage world and it is a key ingredient in our Muscle Rub. There is no CBD or THC in hemp seed oil. It is non-greasy and rich in fatty acids that nourishes dry skin. Hemp seed oil can reduce inflamation, moisturizes and has anti-aging properties. Hemp seed oil is high in vitamin E and minerals.
When it comes to pepermint oil for our products only the best will do. There are 2 types of "Peppermint", there is Mentha arvensis which is cornmint and Mentha piperita which is real peppermint. Many "peppermint" products are made with cornmint which is cheaper. I prefer the real stuff. I use real pure and natural peppermint oil in Peppermint Lip Balm, Mint Chocolate Lip Balm and in Muscle Rub. In Muscle Rub, it sweatens the medicine like smell from the menthol.
100% natural, food grade menthol is the active ingredient in our Muscle Rub. It is what gives the icy/hot sensation. It is derived from mint plant species in the genus Mentha and is usually extracted from the less expensive cornmint (M. arvensis). Menthol is the same no matter which plant it is extracted from so cornmint menthol is the same as any other menthol.
Vanilla is used only in our Vanilla Lip Balm. The vanilla we use is pure organic vanilla and is alcohol free. We use vanilla extract for food, not vanilla essential oil.
